Re: Anime Thread
I used to watch anime when I was younger on TV a lot as well. I had fallen victim to the Pokémon craze and especially loved that series, and I would sometimes read the Pokémon mangas and stuff too, as well things like that for some other mainstream series and the Miyazaki movies (Spirited Away, Castle In The Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, etc), but I would actually only consider myself having been really into anime and manga for the past 6 months or so (and I've long moved on from the Pokémon days ).
My two favorite animes are probably the slow but enchanting Haibane Renmei and the tragic Air (or Air T.V. as it's sometimes known) - both of which are fantasy dramas. Another favorite of mine is Scrapped Princess, which is a slightly lighter sci-fi/fantasy action series. Some other series that I like are Kino's Journey, Last Exile, and Shigofumi.
My favorite manga series are +Anima, which is a really adorable series with great artwork and characters and a certain special charm, and King Of Thorn, a dark seinen survival horror/action series. I just started another series called Chrono Crusade that I'm initially very impressed with as well. Some other series that I've read that stand out to me are After School Nightmare, Beyond The Beyond, and Aquarian Age: Juvenile Orion.

Re: Anime Thread
Well, since I haven't been watching for that long, the six animes I mentioned earlier are the ones I'm most familiar with. If you like fantasy dramas, I'd highly recommend both Haibane Renmei and Air (Air T.V.) - my two favorites.
Haibane Renmei isn't particularly well polished, but it's intriguing and is relaxing to watch. Air...is pretty strange. It's kind of...stupid in places for a lack of a better word (in a way that's almost kinda funny), but it's actually really emotive - I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it so far (I've got like 3 more episodes to go) and it's very memorable. The plot line is known for being tragic and confusing though, which it is a bit hard to follow sometimes later on.
Scrapped Princess is also pretty good as a slightly more typical action anime, it doesn't start out particularly well, but gets a lot darker and overall better about 5 - 7 episodes in. Kino's Journey is also really well-liked, but personally I so far found it a bit...boring (I've only seen two episodes so far, though), but for an episodic, introspective anime it did seem like it could end up being good and it's been quite acclaimed. Some other animes that I intend to check out myself are Kanon (the 2006 version by the same group as Air), Kure-nai and Noir, but I haven't actually seen any of them yet so I can't comment on whether or not they are actually good.
As far as manga goes, I'd recommend +Anima for a fun, lighthearted fantasy, King Of Thorn for something dark, edgy and action-packed, and Chrono Crusade if you want something kind of in-between.
As a side note, I've found this site - MyAnimeList - really helpful in searching for new anime/manga, it has listings and reviews all sorts of series and you can usually find recommendations if you search for your favorite series. I usually discover the animes I watch there, and then go find them on YouTube.

Re: Anime Thread
I like many different types of anime, I also like Haibane Renmai! I like Fruits Basket, Blood+, Elfen Lied, Vampire Knight, Ghost in the Shell, Basilisk. My first experience of anime was when I watched Spirited Away and then gradually got into other anime series and also a lot of manga. Mangas I read include, Model, Beauty Pop, Death Note, Fruits Basket, and the first of King of Thorn.

Also, I just read somwhere that Full Metal Alchemist's creator will release a second part of her anime, so I'm REALLY happy and expectative
